The brief
- First hot metal produced at Green Metal Project using green hydrogen and electric smelting.
- $50M investment toward 1,500+ tpa green iron production at Christmas Creek.
- Partnership with China's TISCO on hydrogen-based ironmaking pilot targeting 5,000 tpa.
Technical approach
Green hydrogen replaces fossil fuels
Hydrogen produced from renewable electricity splits iron oxide, reducing ore to sponge iron without burning coal or gas.
Electric furnace instead of blast furnace
An electric smelting furnace melts sponge iron into liquid metal, powered by renewable electricity rather than coke combustion.
Pilot to commercial production
Fortescue is building renewable capacity—1.4+ GW solar and up to 1 GW wind—to supply green hydrogen and power at scale.
