The brief
- Ariane 6 inaugural flight on 9 July 2024 deployed over 300 satellites for Amazon's Leo constellation by mid-2026.
- An engine anomaly in August 2026 reduced flight frequency to 6 missions; 30+ flights booked; targeting 15+/year cadence.
- Lifts 21.6 t to LEO, 8.2 t to lunar orbit. Modular Ariane 62/64 variants serve institutional and commercial customers.
Technical approach
Ariane 62 and 64 configurations
Ariane 62 has two solid rocket boosters for smaller payloads; Ariane 64 has four boosters for heavier missions, both using the same modular liquid core.
Vulcain 2.1 core with Vinci upper stage
The first and second stages use cryogenic hydrogen and oxygen engines, with the upper stage Vinci re-ignitable for multiple orbit insertion maneuvers.
Built for cost and speed
Ariane 6 was designed with lower manufacturing costs and faster assembly than Ariane 5, aiming for launch cadence of 15+ flights per year.
