Tokamak Energy completes the HTS magnet set to be tested together in Demo4
Tokamak Energy finished building 44 high-temperature superconducting coils using 38 km of REBCO tape for Demo4, a full tokamak magnet system designed for fields above 18 tesla at -253°C. Testing of the complete magnet set was planned through 2024 to validate performance in power-plant-like conditions.
- 44 HTS coils using 38 km of 12mm-wide REBCO tape; field strength >18 tesla at -253°C (20K above absolute zero)
- Requires five times less cooling power than traditional superconductors; 14 toroidal and poloidal field coil stacks in cage structure
- Assembly completed 2023 at Milton Park headquarters; testing through 2024 validates power-plant-scale magnet behavior
