Tim Andrews receives EGEN-2784 pig kidney transplant and achieves record dialysis-free survival
Tim Andrews, age 67, received an EGEN-2784 gene-edited pig kidney on January 25, 2025, at Massachusetts General Hospital under the expanded access program. Unlike the initial recipient, Andrews achieved nine months of continuous dialysis-free function, becoming the longest-surviving recipient of a gene-edited pig kidney xenotransplant. His success validated the durability of the EGEN-2784 design and paved the way for clinical trials.
- Tim Andrews achieved record 271 days dialysis-free with EGEN-2784 kidney.
- Second expanded-access recipient after Rick Slayman, who received transplant in March 2024.
- Success with O-blood-type patient (harder to match with human donor) strengthened evidence for xenotransplant as bridge therapy.
