Tesla shuts down Dojo and disbands its team; Musk says Dojo 3 lives on as many AI6 chips on one board
TeslaAI5 / AI6 chips and Dojo 3
In mid-August 2025 Tesla shut down Dojo, its in-house supercomputer for training self-driving models, and disbanded the team. Musk called Dojo 2 "an evolutionary dead end" once Tesla's chip efforts converged on AI6, a chip Samsung is to build under a $16.5B deal signed weeks earlier.
- Dojo lead Peter Bannon left; about 20 engineers left to found DensityAI.
- Musk: "Dojo 3 arguably lives on in the form of a large number of AI6 [systems-on-a-chip] on a single board."
- Dojo's D1 chip was unveiled at AI Day 2021 and made by TSMC on a 7 nm process.
