Tesla AI5 chip design completed and taped out; Samsung foundry confirms July 2026 production tape-out on 2nm process
TeslaAI5 / AI6 chips and Dojo 3
Elon Musk congratulated Tesla's chip team on taping out AI5, meaning the design was locked and sent for manufacturing, and said AI6 and Dojo 3 were also in work. Tape-out is not the finish line: automotive AI chips usually need 12 to 18 months more before volume production, and Tesla had already moved AI5 volume to mid-2027.
- Musk: "Congrats to the @Tesla_AI chip design team on taping out AI5! AI6, Dojo3 & other exciting chips in work."
- Tesla first said in June 2024 that AI5 would be in cars in the second half of 2025.
- Musk says AI5 is up to 10x more powerful than AI4; Cybercab launches on AI4.
- Tesla needs several hundred thousand finished AI5 boards before switching Cybercab production to it.
- AI6 is tied to Samsung's 2 nm line and has slipped about six months on yields.
