SunZia Wind, the largest wind farm in the US, achieves commercial operation with 3.65 GW and 550-mile HVDC line
Pattern EnergySunZia Wind and Transmission
Pattern Energy's SunZia Wind and Transmission project in southern New Mexico reached full commercial operation, with 916 turbines generating 3.65 GW. The accompanying 550-mile HVDC transmission line delivers power to Arizona and California utilities (Arizona Public Service and Southern California Edison). SunZia is now the largest wind farm in the United States.
- 3.65 GW makes SunZia the largest wind farm in the US; exceeds next two largest (Alta Wind ~1.1 GW, Great Prairie ~1.0 GW) by threefold
- 916 turbines (674 GE Vernova 3.6 MW + 242 Vestas 4.5 MW) expected to generate 12.5–13 TWh annually at ~40% capacity factor
- ±525 kV HVDC (largest VSC-based link in US) covers 550 miles with ~3% loss; transmits 3 GW, routing ~2/3 of power to California
- PPAs with Arizona Public Service and Southern California Edison provide stable revenue from 2–3 GW capacity
