NVIDIA releases open Earth-2 weather models: 15-day Medium Range and 0–6 hour storm Nowcasting

NVIDIAEarth-2

At the American Meteorological Society's annual meeting, NVIDIA released Earth-2 as an open family of pretrained weather models, frameworks and inference libraries covering the whole forecast chain. Medium Range (Atlas) forecasts 70+ variables up to 15 days ahead; Nowcasting (StormScope) predicts kilometre-scale storms 0–6 hours ahead. A data-assimilation model, HealDA, was announced for later in 2026.

  • NVIDIA says Atlas outperforms leading open models on the most commonly measured variables.
  • StormScope is claimed to beat physics-based models on short-term precipitation and predicts satellite and radar images directly.
  • Brightband runs Medium Range operationally; the Israel Meteorological Service runs CorrDiff at 2.5 km.
  • The Weather Company and the US National Weather Service are evaluating the models; TotalEnergies and Eni are testing them.
  • Models are available through Earth2Studio, Hugging Face and GitHub.
