NVIDIA publishes HealDA, an open AI model that builds a global weather starting state from raw observations
NVIDIA released HealDA on Hugging Face, the data-assimilation piece of Earth-2. It turns a short window of satellite and ground observations into a global picture of the atmosphere that off-the-shelf AI forecast models can start from, a job that traditionally takes hours of supercomputer time.
- Takes about 10 million observations per 24 hours: microwave sounders, ground stations, GNSS radio occultation and satellite winds.
- Outputs a roughly 1° (~100 km) global state, regridded to 0.25° for forecast models.
- A 330M-parameter vision transformer with 24 blocks, tested on H100 GPUs.
- Released under the NVIDIA Open Model License, which allows commercial use.
