NextEra files with the NRC to start the regulatory path to restart Duane Arnold
NextEra EnergyDuane Arnold restart
NextEra asked the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a licensing change, the first step toward restoring the operating licence of its closed Duane Arnold reactor in Iowa. The 615 MW boiling-water plant shut in 2020 after a storm damaged its cooling towers, and its fuel had been moved into storage. NextEra's CEO said a restart could come as early as the end of 2028.
- First formal step to restore an operating licence that ended in 2020
- Plant had supplied 9.2% of Iowa's electricity before closing
- Earliest restart then cited: end of 2028
