Navy adds $2.3B to Electric Boat's Columbia contract as the lead boat slips to 2029

The Navy awarded a $2.3B modification to Electric Boat's Columbia-class contract to speed buying and building five boats. At the time the lead boat, District of Columbia, had slipped 17 months to 2029, against a 2027 original date.

• 12 Columbia boats are planned at about $126.4B (CRS, Sept 2025).
• The lead boat is estimated at $16.1B.
• Ohio-class boats begin retiring in 2027, about one a year until 2040.
