Musk unveils Terafab, a Tesla-SpaceX-xAI chip fab venture in Texas aiming at 1 TW of compute a year
At a presentation in Austin, Elon Musk presented Terafab as a joint chip-making venture of Tesla, SpaceX and xAI, first estimated at $20-25B. It plans two fabrication lines at 2 nm: one for inference chips in Tesla cars and Optimus robots, one for space-hardened chips for SpaceX's orbital AI satellites. Musk said about 80% of its eventual output is meant for space.
- SpaceX's involvement had not been disclosed before.
- Planned at the north campus of Giga Texas, with a goal of 1 terawatt of compute a year.
- Long-run target of 1 million wafer starts a month.
- Tesla's AI5 and AI6 chips still come from TSMC and Samsung in the meantime.
