Google and Energy Dome partner on Arizona and Ireland CO2 battery projects
Energy Dome and Google announced plans for two utility-scale CO2 battery projects. Arizona: 19 MW / 200 MWh at Coronado Generating Station in St. Johns, co-developed with Salt River Project, launching 2029. Ireland: 23 MW / 200 MWh near Rhode in County Offaly on a decommissioned peat site, with a 10-year capacity contract from EirGrid, launching 2028. Both projects will use decommissioned fossil fuel sites to provide long-duration grid storage.
- Arizona: 19 MW / 200 MWh at Coronado Generating Station; 10-hour storage capacity powering ~4,275 homes; 20-year tolling agreement with SRP
- Ireland: 23 MW / 200 MWh in County Offaly; 10-year capacity contract with EirGrid; potential second 200 MWh unit under consideration
- Technology: Compressed CO2 storage with no lithium or rare minerals; operates 8–24 hour discharge window
- Timelines: Arizona on track for 2029 commissioning; Ireland targeting 2028; both leverage existing grid infrastructure at brownfield sites
