Germany picks Biblis as home of its national laser fusion hub

Focused EnergyBiblis Laser Fusion Plant

Germany's research ministry chose the former RWE nuclear site at Biblis as the industrial centre of a national laser fusion hub under its Fusion 2040 programme. Focused Energy and Marvel Fusion applied jointly, backed by three German states. Focused Energy still aims to build the world's first commercial laser fusion plant there by the mid-2030s.

  • The ministry selected Focused Energy to lead one of three national fusion hubs; the others focus on magnetic fusion and on fuel cycle and materials.
  • Biblis hosts the Fusion Industrialization Campus; Hamburg and Schleswig-Holstein host an R&D campus, with a satellite network of institutes in other states.
  • The company plans €200 million of private investment over two years and about €500 million by 2030; it recently closed a US$240 million Series A.
  • Officials refer to planned federal support, which the release does not describe as final.
  • RWE, which ran the Biblis plant, supports the project with infrastructure and regulatory expertise.
