Generation Study passes 85,000 babies; 200+ flagged with possible treatable conditions

Genomics EnglandGeneration Study

Genomics England reported more than 85,000 newborns recruited at over 70 hospitals, with 64,000+ results returned and over 200 condition-suspected results. One baby was found to carry a gene change linked to adrenoleukodystrophy (ALD), a progressive brain and nerve disease; testing then found the same change in his four-year-old brother.

  • 85,000+ recruited of a 100,000 target; the study runs until 2027.
  • More than 99% of babies are expected to get a 'no condition suspected' result.
  • Both boys now get regular blood tests and MRI scans, so doctors can offer a stem cell transplant before major symptoms appear.
