Genomics EnglandGeneration Study

Genomics England and NHS England started testing newborns in the Generation Study, sequencing whole genomes from cord blood to look for more than 200 rare, treatable conditions. Over 1,000 participants had already consented. The routine heel-prick test checks for 9 conditions.

  • Target: up to 100,000 newborns in England.
  • Suspected conditions reported within 28 days; others within a few months.
  • Positive findings are confirmed with NHS tests before any diagnosis.
