First thorium addition to TMSR-LF1; uranium-233 breeding achieved for the first time
Shanghai Institute of Applied Physics, CASTMSR-LF1 (Thorium Molten Salt Reactor)
SINAP successfully added thorium fuel to TMSR-LF1 and achieved the first conversion of thorium-232 to fissile uranium-233 in a molten salt reactor. This breakthrough proves the thorium fuel cycle can work in a practical reactor.
- First time thorium added to a molten salt reactor worldwide
- Uranium-233 successfully bred from thorium-232 conversion
- Demonstrates feasibility of thorium fuel cycle for future reactors
- Thorium fuel conversion ratio of ~0.1 achieved as designed
