The Department of Energy named two new AMD-powered systems for Oak Ridge. Discovery, an HPE Cray GX5000 with AMD Venice CPUs and MI430X GPUs, arrives in 2028 to succeed Frontier. Lux, an AI cluster with AMD MI355X GPUs due in early 2026, is run as a public-private partnership with AMD, HPE and Oracle.
- Discovery: HPE Cray GX5000, AMD EPYC Venice CPUs, AMD Instinct MI430X GPUs, HPE K3000 storage built on DAOS; delivery 2028.
- Lux: AMD MI355X GPUs, EPYC CPUs and Pensando networking on HPE ProLiant XD685 servers, with Oracle Cloud Infrastructure as a partner.
- DOE described Lux as a new public-private model, while Discovery follows the traditional procurement route.
- Named uses include AI models for nuclear safety, digital twins for precision medicine and aerospace design.
