Boston Metal and Outokumpu sign an MoU to test MOE on stainless steel by-products and chromium ore

Boston MetalMolten oxide electrolysis (MOE)

Boston Metal and Finnish stainless-steel maker Outokumpu signed a memorandum of understanding to test molten oxide electrolysis on by-products from stainless production and on chromium ore sourced from Outokumpu's Kemi mine in Finland. The test will evaluate MOE's ability to transform difficult-to-reuse side streams into valuable inputs.

  • Boston Metal's MOE process runs electricity through iron ore dissolved in molten oxide, using inert anodes; the process releases oxygen instead of CO2.
  • Outokumpu supplies chrome-oxide feedstock from its Kemi mine in Finland; the test transforms 'side streams' typically difficult to reuse into inputs for inert anode production.
  • The collaboration strengthens Boston Metal's critical supply chain for scale-up while creating a circular approach to stainless steel manufacturing.
