Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute show Atlas packing and sorting with one large behavior model controlling its whole body

Boston DynamicsAtlas

Boston Dynamics and Toyota Research Institute showed Atlas performing packing, sorting and organising items while walking, recovering when boxes were closed or moved mid-task. A single neural network—a large behavior model trained from human demonstrations—controls the whole body, treating hands and feet alike.

  • Large Behavior Model (LBM) unifies whole-body control; no separation between walking/balance and arm control.
  • Demonstrations from humans; model learns task intent and executes it robustly across perturbation.
  • Long-horizon sequencing: packing → sorting → walking → recovery from closed/moved boxes mid-task.
  • LBM approach: new skills added quickly via demos, no hand-coded controllers; scales to more capable behaviours.
