Basemat is set at Darlington for the first BWRX-300 in the Western Hemisphere
The concrete basemat was poured at Ontario Power Generation's Darlington New Nuclear Project, marking the start of actual reactor structure construction for the first BWRX-300 to be built in the Western Hemisphere. This followed official approval to begin construction in May 2025.
- Basemat set marks transition from site preparation to structural construction.
- First BWRX-300 is expected to be operational by end of 2029.
- Four units planned at Darlington will deliver 1.2 GW total (enough for over a million homes).
- Key components including the reactor pressure vessel are in manufacturing at Canadian facilities.
