Current obstacles

Thin China salesOnly 9 robots went to Chinese hospitals in the first half of 2026, versus 49 abroad; the home market depends on slow public tenders.
Building evidence and trained surgeons abroadEach new country needs local surgeons trained and outcome data gathered; Edge opened a training centre in Europe for this.

Physics limits

No sense of touchThe surgeon feels little or no force through the controls, so tissue tension must be judged by eye. Adding reliable force feedback through thin, sterilisable instruments is still hard.
Network delay caps remote surgeryHand-eye coordination degrades as signal delay grows past roughly a tenth of a second, and light in fibre takes about 5 ms per 1,000 km, so distance and network quality bound telesurgery.
Cable-driven tips wear outTiny wristed instruments are moved by thin steel cables that stretch and fray, so each instrument is rated for a limited number of uses, a recurring cost per operation.

Console

Surgeon sits at a 3D console

The surgeon watches a magnified 3D image and moves hand controls; the robot copies the motion at the patient, scaled down and with hand tremor filtered out.

Arms

Several arms, several small cuts

Separate arms each carry an instrument or the camera through its own small incision, giving wide reach and room to work for complex tumour operations.

Wrists

Wristed instruments

Instrument tips bend like a human wrist inside the body, which straight hand-held keyhole tools cannot do, making stitching in tight spaces easier.

Remote

Telesurgery link

In MP2000 the console and robot can sit in different cities, linked over a network, so a specialist can operate on a distant patient.
