When large groups of neurons fire together they create voltage ripples of a few microvolts at the scalp. Sensors record these many times a second.
EPOC X uses felt pads wetted with salt water to conduct the signal through hair; earbuds press dry sensors against the ear canal skin.
Software splits the signal into rhythms (slow waves in drowsiness, faster ones in concentration) and machine-learning models map patterns to mental states.
Users train the software on a few repeated mental actions; it then spots that pattern and fires a command, such as moving an object on screen.
