Proof verification on-chainVerifying proofs on-chain requires complex polynomial checks consuming significant gas. Smart contract efficiency is the bottleneck.

Physics limits

Proof sizeZero-knowledge proofs are large (multiple megabytes for Ethereum blocks). Sending them on-chain requires rollups to pay gas, limiting efficiency gains.
Verification latencyEven with optimized smart contracts, verifying a proof takes significant computation. Ethereum block time (12 seconds) limits how fast a rollup can confirm transactions.
Hardware specializationReal-time proving requires specialized GPUs and networks. Unlike CPUs, GPUs are harder to scale, have limited supplier diversity, and are expensive.
