The brief
- The OP Stack powers production chains including World Chain, Unichain, Zora, Ink, Mode and many others.
- Base exited in Feb 2026 to operate independently, reducing OP Labs' sequencer revenue.
- Interoperability (Interop) was approved in September 2026, enabling atomic cross-chain transactions on the Superchain.
Technical approach
Modular rollup framework
Developers assemble rollup chains from pluggable components: execution, settlement, sequencing, and data availability.
Multi-chain governance
Members run the same OP Stack version and are governed by the Optimism Collective, enabling coordinated upgrades.
Atomic cross-chain transactions
Transactions atomically change state on multiple chains. Both succeed or both fail; no bridges needed.
Flexible DA layers
OP Stack chains can prove their data on Ethereum, Celestia, or other DA layers. Not all chains must use Ethereum L1, reducing costs.
