The brief
- Survodutide met phase 3 endpoints in SYNCHRONIZE-1 (April 2026) and SYNCHRONIZE-2 (October 2026).
- SYNCHRONIZE-1: 16.6% weight loss with 63% liver fat reduction versus placebo.
- Boehringer Ingelheim licensed Survodutide globally from Zealand Pharma; leads development.
Technical approach
Glucagon and GLP-1 receptors
Survodutide activates glucagon (energy expenditure and fat burning) and GLP-1 (appetite suppression). Targets weight loss from two directions.
Targeted liver fat reduction
Glucagon agonism preferentially reduces liver fat (63% reduction in phase 3), addressing metabolic dysfunction-associated fatty liver disease directly.
Minimize muscle loss
The combination preserves lean muscle during weight loss, an advantage over GLP-1-only approaches.
