The brief

Analyst view
  • AMCA prototype phase (~Rs 15,000 crore, 5 jets) was approved by India's security cabinet in March 2024.
  • Tata, an L&T-BEL team and a Bharat Forge-BEML team bid to build the prototypes; bids are due 30 October 2026.
  • The RFP wants a first flight within 30 months of contract (about 2029); Air Force induction is expected in the mid-2030s.

Technical approach

As reported
Design authority

Designs, then hands building to industry

ADA owns the design; under the 2025 execution model a private-led partner builds the prototypes, instead of state firm HAL by default.

Stealth

Shape and internal weapons

AMCA hides weapons in internal bays and is shaped to deflect radar, so it can approach defended areas before being detected.

Engines

Imported first, Indian later

The first version uses two GE F414 engines; a 120 kN engine to be co-developed by DRDO's GTRE lab and Safran is meant for later aircraft.
