Usage caps on cloud featuresServer-based requests have daily limits that vary with demand; expanded limits are planned as a paid option.

Physics limits

Phones have little memory for modelsA phone shares a few gigabytes of memory with every app, so on-device models must stay at a few billion parameters and be heavily compressed, which costs accuracy.
Privacy and power pull apartThe biggest models need data-centre chips. Keeping personal data private means sending it only to trusted servers or keeping it local, which limits model size and speed.
Acting on your behalf needs near-perfect accuracyA wrong answer is an annoyance; a wrong message sent or event deleted is a real harm. Language models still make occasional confident errors.

Simple requests run on the device's own model; harder ones go to Private Cloud Compute servers, which do not keep personal data.

Knows your stuff and your screen

An on-device orchestrator searches the Spotlight index of messages, mail and photos and reads what is on screen to resolve requests.

Acts through app actions

Apps expose actions in an App Toolbox; Siri chains them to do tasks across apps instead of only answering questions.

Gemini-based foundation models

The underlying Apple Foundation Models were built with Google's Gemini technology, which Apple judged the most capable base after an evaluation.
