Tokamak Energy reports 100 million °C ion temperature in ST40
Tokamak Energy announced its privately funded ST40 spherical tokamak reached a plasma ion temperature of 100 million °C, the threshold needed for commercial fusion, verified by an independent advisory board of international experts. A peer-reviewed paper followed in Nuclear Fusion in 2023.
- 100 million °C plasma ion temperature achieved in ST40; verified by independent international expert advisory board
- Threshold temperature required for commercial fusion; highest temperature in spherical tokamak and any privately funded tokamak
- Accomplished in five years with less than £50M funding using compact spherical design; peer-reviewed in Nuclear Fusion 2023
