Tesla AI5 chip design completed and taped out; Samsung foundry confirms July 2026 production tape-out on 2nm process
Tesla completed design tape-out of its AI5 chip in April 2026. Samsung subsequently confirmed tape-out at its Taylor, Texas foundry on 2nm process technology in July 2026. The chip will power Full Self-Driving, Optimus robots and Tesla training clusters, delivering 8x more compute and 9x more memory than the current HW4 chip. Volume production expected mid-2027.
- AI5 design tape-out completed April 2026; Samsung foundry tape-out confirmed July 2026.
- Specifications: 2,500 TOPS AI performance, 144 GB memory per unit.
- Dual-sourcing between Samsung (2nm-class SF2T at Taylor, Texas) and TSMC (leading-edge nodes).
- Volume production targeting mid-2027 after engineering samples and yield verification.
