TAME trial awaiting full funding; no participants enrolled as of August 2026
American Federation for Aging ResearchTAME (Targeting Aging with Metformin)
Despite FDA approval of its protocol in 2015, the TAME trial has not enrolled any participants as of August 2026. The trial requires $45–75 million total. The National Institute on Aging provided approximately $5 million, leaving a substantial gap. Metformin is off-patent and costs pennies per dose, so pharmaceutical companies have no financial incentive to fund research. Philanthropic support remains essential but incomplete.
