Solar Foods joins Deep Space Food Consortium as foundational member

Solar Foods

Solar Foods, the Finnish maker of the protein Solein by gas fermentation, has joined the Deep Space Food Consortium as a foundational member. The consortium coordinates researchers, space agencies and food companies on food for low Earth orbit and long-duration missions.

  • Solar Foods was named the international category winner of the NASA and Canadian Space Agency Deep Space Food Challenge in 2024.
  • A European Space Agency-funded contract with OHB System AG covers a small gas-fermentation pilot, with the aim of eventually testing on the International Space Station.
  • The company says Solein could cut resupply needs by recovering water from the hydrogen and exhaled carbon dioxide that habitats usually vent.
  • The announcement gives no membership fees, duration or quantified resupply savings.
