NIH, DOE and Biohub sign agreement to build open biology data for predictive AI models

NIH

The US Department of Energy, the National Institutes of Health and Biohub signed a memorandum of understanding to build an open biological data foundation for predictive models of living systems. The models are meant to forecast how cells respond to interventions, so scientists can run some experiments digitally. The effort is tied to the Genesis Mission executive order.

  • DOE plans more than $500 million over five years for cell research: data collection, lab measurement and imaging, modelling and computation.
  • Biohub commits $500 million over five years to its Virtual Biology Initiative, for technologies and multimodal datasets.
  • DOE brings computing power, exascale systems, autonomous labs and biological expertise; NIH brings health data, imaging resources and its research enterprise.
  • The partners plan coordinated data generation at national and international scale, and Biohub invited the global scientific community to join.
