White House launches the BRAIN Initiative with about $100M for its first year across NIH, DARPA and NSF

The US government announced the BRAIN Initiative to build technologies that show how individual brain cells and circuits work. The first-year plan, for fiscal 2014, was about $100M, split between NIH, DARPA and NSF. The stated aim was new ways to treat and prevent conditions such as Alzheimer's, epilepsy and brain injury.
