NHTSA escalates its FSD probe to an engineering analysis after more crashes in poor visibility
TeslaFull Self-Driving (Supervised)
NHTSA escalated its preliminary FSD investigation to a formal engineering analysis covering approximately 3.2 million Teslas, examining whether FSD detects camera blindness from glare, dust or fog and warns drivers in time. In nine crashes reviewed, including one fatal, alerts came only just before impact.
- Scope: ~3.2 million Tesla Model 3, Y, X, S, and Cybertruck vehicles
- Issue: FSD camera degradation detection fails in glare, fog, dust; warnings come at moment of impact
- Incidents reviewed: nine suspected crashes, including one fatal and two injuries
- Previous probe: covered 2.4 million vehicles; escalation precedes potential recall decision
