MiAlgae gets £2.5m from Scottish National Investment Bank for Grangemouth omega-3 plant

Factory

MiAlgae, a University of Edinburgh spinout, received £2.5 million ($3.3 million) from the Scottish National Investment Bank to help build its factory on the former Grangemouth refinery site. The plant ferments DHA-rich microalgae fed on whisky byproducts to make a vegan omega-3 ingredient, an alternative to fish oil.

  • The facility will produce over 10 times the company's current omega-3 output and process over 36 million litres of whisky byproducts.
  • The site is the former Petroineos refinery, which closed in April 2025; construction started in late 2025.
  • The process also treats waste water, which the company says it returns to waterways as clean water.
  • MiAlgae expects its workforce to grow by 90 to 156 people by the end of 2028 and plans to supply pet nutrition customers in the UK, EU and US.
  • The funding follows an earlier £3 million from the UK government.
