Medtronic PEER 2 interim data: sensing the sacral nerves' response could automate InterStim setup

MedtronicInterStim sacral neuromodulation (Micro / X)

At the American Urological Association meeting, Medtronic showed interim results from its PEER 2 study, which records the nerves' electrical response to each pulse through the InterStim lead. The measured response thresholds closely matched what patients reported feeling, suggesting therapy could one day be set up objectively and automatically. The sensing stimulator used is investigational.

  • 82 women with overactive bladder were tested with an InterStim SureScan lead and an investigational external stimulator.
  • 85% to 100% of subjects showed measurable sacral evoked responses.
  • Objective response thresholds correlated strongly with patients' own sensory reports.
  • Not FDA approved; the study is ongoing.
