Furukawa Electric and Tokamak Energy start study on making HTS tape in the UK
Furukawa Electric, SuperPower's parent, and Tokamak Energy signed an agreement at 10 Downing Street to begin research, prototyping and a feasibility assessment of HTS tape manufacturing in the UK. Any UK production depends on the results of these studies. The UK's STEP prototype fusion plant, targeted for 2040, is expected to need about 30,000 km of HTS tape.
- Signed 14 June 2026, alongside the launch of a UK-Japan Frontier Technology Partnership.
