Fujitsu wins RIKEN contract to design the FugakuNEXT supercomputer and its MONAKA-X CPU

RIKEN contracted Fujitsu to design the overall system, compute nodes and CPU for FugakuNEXT, the successor to Fugaku. The CPU, MONAKA-X, is a follow-on to Fujitsu's MONAKA data-centre chip with added AI acceleration.

• The basic design phase was set to end on 27 February 2026.
• MONAKA-X is built around 3D chip stacking and very low-voltage circuits to save power.
• The deal covers the whole system design, not just the chip.
