First multi-channel cochlear implant surgically implanted in Vienna

Dr. Kurt Burian in Vienna performed the first surgical implantation of a multi-channel cochlear implant developed by Ingeborg and Erwin Hochmair. This breakthrough used multiple electrodes to encode different sound frequencies, enabling much better speech perception than single-channel designs.
