FedEx expands Mech trailer loading from a pilot site to its Hagerstown, Maryland hub
FedEx put Dexterity's Mech robots to work loading trailers at its Hagerstown, Maryland hub, after an earlier pilot. Mech is a two-armed robot on a mobile base that stacks parcels into trailers, guided by Dexterity's Foresight AI model, which plans where each box goes. Loading trailers tightly and safely is one of the most physically punishing jobs in logistics, and FedEx loads tens of thousands of trailers a day in the US.
- Number of robots and throughput figures were not disclosed.
- FedEx and Dexterity describe Hagerstown as a blueprint: the robots are being tied into hub planning, trailer assignment, maintenance and staffing.
- Wider rollout across the FedEx network depends on how the Hagerstown deployment performs.
