FDA accepts effectiveness section for LOY-003, Loyal's daily IGF-1-lowering pill for large and giant dogs
The FDA told Loyal that LOY-003, a once-daily tablet for large and giant-breed dogs, has a 'reasonable expectation of effectiveness' (RXE) for extending lifespan. It is Loyal's third drug to clear this step, after LOY-001 and LOY-002. Acceptance of the effectiveness section is a step toward approval, not approval itself.
- The drug lowers growth hormone and IGF-1, a growth signal that drives the large size of big breeds and is linked to faster aging.
- Large dogs can have 2 to 30 times more IGF-1 than medium and small dogs, and big breeds often live 6 to 8 years versus up to about 20 for small ones.
- LOY-001, which also targets this pathway in large dogs, was the first drug in any species to get an RXE for lifespan extension; LOY-002 is for senior dogs.
- Loyal gave no timeline for the remaining steps toward approval.
