DOE selects Mitra Chem for a $100M award for US battery cathode manufacturing

Mitra ChemLFP and LMFP cathodes

The DOE selected Mitra Chem for a $100 million award, plus $25 million from Michigan, to build North America's first mass-production plant for LFP cathode material in Muskegon, Michigan. The target is 15,000 tonnes a year by 2027, nearly doubling US capacity, with later expansion to 30,000 tonnes.

  • DOE award of $100 million plus Michigan grant of $25 million totals $125 million for LFP cathode production in Muskegon.
  • Target: 15,000 tonnes per year by 2027 (nearly doubling US capacity); later expansion to 30,000 tonnes supports millions of EV batteries annually.
  • LFP (lithium iron phosphate) is a low-cost, high-safety cathode chemistry; the facility will be North America's first mass-production plant for this material.
