BrimstoneBrimstone process

The DOE's Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations selected Brimstone for up to $189 million under its Industrial Demonstrations Program to build a first commercial plant making up to 140,000 tonnes per year of portland cement and supplementary cementitious materials from carbon-free calcium silicate rock.

  • Up to $189 million federal award for a first commercial Rock Refinery plant; capacity up to 140,000 tonnes per year of ordinary portland cement.
  • Plant avoids approximately 120,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually compared to conventional cement; uses silicate rock instead of limestone and fossil fuels.
  • Brimstone's process splits common rocks into their elements via a fully electrified pathway, producing cement and other products from the same feedstock.
