DOE picks Dell and NVIDIA to build Doudna, NERSC's next flagship supercomputer, due 2026

US Department of EnergyDoudna (NERSC-10)

Energy Secretary Chris Wright announced a contract with Dell to build NERSC-10 at Berkeley Lab, named Doudna after the CRISPR Nobel laureate. Built on NVIDIA's Vera Rubin chips with liquid cooling, it is meant to deliver more than ten times the performance of the current Perlmutter system and to analyse data streamed from DOE experiments in near real time.

  • Dell builds the system; NVIDIA supplies Vera Rubin CPU-GPU chips and Quantum-X800 networking.
  • More than 10x Perlmutter's performance; due in 2026.
  • Serves 11,000+ researchers and about 800 projects a year.
  • Linked to DOE experimental facilities over the ESnet network for live data analysis.
