Construction of India's Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor completed after 20 years

BHAVINI / IGCAR (India DAE)/Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor (PFBR), Kalpakkam

After two decades of construction, BHAVINI completed the Prototype Fast Breeder Reactor at Kalpakkam. The 500 MWe sodium-cooled reactor was ready for commissioning and fuel loading.

• Construction took approximately 20 years from start to completion.
• Reactor is located at the Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research complex in Kalpakkam, Tamil Nadu.
• Design incorporates experience from the smaller Fast Breeder Test Reactor (FBTR) that operated since the 1980s.
