Construction begins on Tata Steel's £1.25B electric arc furnace at Port Talbot

Building work started on the Port Talbot electric arc furnace, then due to run by the end of 2027. The furnace is designed to tap 320 t of molten steel every 42 minutes, with two new ladle furnaces for refining. Tenova was contracted to deliver the furnace in October 2024, and the local council approved planning in February 2025.

  • Construction began July 14, 2025; operation then targeted for end-2027.
