Colossal unveils GenoMorph AI, which flags 2,300 DNA targets for its dodo reconstruction
Colossal Biosciences has unveiled GenoMorph, an AI tool that it says has identified 2,300 DNA targets that shape the dodo's beak and facial structure. The model was trained on developmental data from quails, ducks, chickens and pigeons, because dodo DNA degrades quickly in Mauritius's hot, wet climate. It works as a filter, separating genetic changes that affect appearance from ordinary natural variation.
- Colossal has assembled only one high-quality dodo genome, compared with 104 for the woolly mammoth.
- The 2,300 figure comes from the company's own announcement and has not been independently verified.
- The targets are inferred from related birds; the tool narrows which edits to study and is not a reconstructed bird.
- The page gives no timeline or next steps beyond the feature it cites.
