Coinbase launches x402 payments protocol for stablecoins over HTTP

Coinbase unveiled x402, an open protocol reviving the HTTP 402 status code to embed stablecoin payments in HTTP requests. The protocol enables clients and AI agents to send cryptographically signed USDC transfers without accounts, cards, or checkout flows. Coinbase released it on its Developer Platform with support for Base and Solana.
