AbbVie acquires Capstan Therapeutics for $2.1 billion, gaining in vivo CAR-T platform CPTX2309 for autoimmune diseases
AbbVie announced a definitive agreement to acquire Capstan Therapeutics for up to $2.1 billion in cash. The deal brings CPTX2309, a targeted lipid nanoparticle-based in vivo CAR-T therapy, into AbbVie's immunology portfolio. CPTX2309 delivers anti-CD19 CAR mRNA directly to CD8+ T cells in the body, enabling B cell depletion without the complexity of ex vivo cell manufacturing or chemotherapy-based lymphodepletion.
- Capstan deal priced at $2.1 billion in cash; announced June 30, 2025.
- CPTX2309 is in Phase 1 development for B cell-mediated autoimmune diseases.
- Technology does not require lymphodepletion chemotherapy or ex vivo cell manipulation.
- Preclinical data showed rapid, deep B cell depletion in blood and tissues.
- First healthy volunteer participants dosed in June 2025; enrollment ongoing.
